Winter Activities
in The Snowies
Winter in the Snowy Mountains offers a uniquely Australian alpine experience, and your Crackenback accommodation puts you right in the heart of it all. From your base on Crackenback Ridge, you're perfectly positioned to explore what the region has to offer – from the accessible slopes at Thredbo and Perisher to quiet backcountry adventures and cozy mountain moments. Sure, it's not the European Alps, but there's something special about skiing and exploring in Australia's highest country. After calling these mountains home for decades, we know how to make the most of winter up here – and we're happy to share.

Ski Resorts
-
Thredbo
Thredbo is our pick of resorts this season with fewer queues and plenty of great trails and events. Thredbo is a 15-minute scenic drive up the Alpine Way making for a very convenient commute! You will need a National Parks Pass for your car and we recommend purchasing your lift tickets in advance. Check out their events page to see whether they have Aprés at the hotel!
-
Crackenback
Perisher is also a great resort with loads of trails to explore. This season Perisher car park has been filling up on the weekends. So we recommend catching The Ski Tube which is only 5 minutes down the road. It is an extra add-on to your Lift Pass but it will save you time and the disappointment of not getting into the resort! You do not require a Parks Pass for the Ski-Tube.
-
Charlotte's Pass
Charlotte’s Pass is a great alternative to save some dollars and try something a little different. While the resort is smaller it will still keep you happily skiing for a day and enjoying the big backcountry views. With the historic old lodges, pub, and relaxed staff there is a certain charm to Charlotte’s that makes it worth checking out. Passes include on-snow transport from the Perisher Ski Tube.

with K7 Adventures.
Backcountry Adventures
-
Thredbo
Thredbo has some stellar backcountry access if you are looking to experience something outside of the resort. This is the most direct access to Mt. Kosciuszko if you want to take on the challenge of summiting in winter! We always recommend a guide for the backcountry and this is our favourite!
-
Deadhorse Gap
Deadhorse Gap is a snowgum-filled winter wonderland! With a woody access trail to some stunning scenes, it makes for a perfect half-day outing or winter picnic spot (if the weather is good). We always recommend a guide for the backcountry and K7 Adventures are our go-to!
-
Guthega
Guthega has some great backcountry access and plenty of Snowy River views. While the Illawong Hike is a little tedious you also get the reward of crossing the Snowy River on a suspension bridge. This is the best way to experience the wonders of Blue Lake, Mt Twynam, and The Western Faces. Again you will need a guide!
